Indian Ocean Paddlers

About Indian Ocean Paddlers

Indian Ocean Paddlers is a group of people dedicated to the art of downwind ocean paddling. The majority of our members have Molokai (fibreglass, carbon, kevlar etc.) ocean racing surf skis. We all like going fast on the ocean, especially with the wind and waves behind us. And we want to grow the sport by getting more people into it and learning how to be better ocean paddlers!

The Club training and paddling sessions are as follows: • MWF 5:30am on the water at Chidley Point in Mosman Park – for the really fast paddlers, a hard training session. • Saturday 8am at Hillarys Marina – a coaching session for all levels, run by certified coaches. • Weekends and very much weather-dependent – timed downwind paddles generally from Fremantle to Trigg (although some of us only go to City Beach). Details of these paddles are posted on the website by Friday mornings.

We’ll do these downwind paddles fortnightly and we're working on a handicapping system based on your times, so that all of us should finish at the same time.

What IOP is not: • We don’t have club rooms so there is no boat storage • We don’t have any club boats for people to try (yet!) • We don’t do social (i.e. sea kayaking) paddles although we do have social events after paddling – during the paddles we’re all trying to beat each other so we’re not talking much!

As a result we’re probably not a good club for beginner paddlers unless you are absolutely certain that you want to do downwind ocean paddling and already have your own boat.

We do have a good mix of levels of paddlers, from the elite guys who most of us only see at the beginning of a paddle, to the slow but enthusiastic group working their way up to a Freo to Trigg paddle. If you’re interested but not sure, we’re happy for you to come along to a couple of paddles and see what you think before you join.
